DVD format

DVDs are
usually released well after movies has hit the screens and made enough money. However, because
movies are not released at the same time all over the world (movies usually
hit the screens in Europe when DVDs are released in Asia), the movie
industry created different regions where DVDs cannot be exchanged in order
to prevent people from getting DVDs abroad before the movie has even hit the
screen in their own country. This DVD and DVD player encoding also guaranties
market exclusivity to film distributors. Therefore, a Zone 1 DVD can
only be played on a Zone 1 DVD player, and if you live in Zone 2, you would
only be able to purchase a Zone 2 DVD Player.

- Those 3 systems all have
different technical specs which affect image & colour quality and which
prevent VHS tapes from one standard to be played correctly in an equipment of an
other standard.
- It is however possible
to view a PAL VHS tape in an SECAM VCR and vice versa but the picture will
remain black and white.
